Although a bit of a sportsman, with 14 elk trophies to his credit, Bierstadt’s emblematic, glowingly lit, carefully composed Yosemite Valley, Yellowstone, and Colorado paintings, with their dramatic skies, sweeping valleys, rocky crags, and painterly manner of contrasting light and dark and sharp and fuzzy to convey great distances, are usually devoid of people or beast.
